At Itaú Cultural, Ocupação Zuzu presents an extensive overview of the life and work of one of the most exceptional women in the history of Brazil.

Zuzu Angel opens the exhibition series Ocupação this year at Itaú Cultural

Ocupação Zuzu is the 17th edition of the series organized by Itaú Cultural, as well as the first one to talk about fashion and the largest one up to now. It contains approximately 400 items related to Zuzu Angel: dresses, sketches, documents, photos and the letters she wrote to Brazilian and foreign personalities, military officers, American politicians, and intellectuals in her search for her son who was imprisoned and killed by the Brazilian dictatorship. Workshops, a film cycle and meetings with designers are also part of the exhibition that opens on April 1st – the 50th anniversary date of the military coup d'état. It will close on May 11th, Mother’s Day. See the release for all the details.

In Zuzu Angel’s Weavings

Ocupação Zuzu is co-curated by Hildegard Angel, Zuzu’s daughter, a journalist and founder of the Instituto Zuzu Angel and of the Fashion Museum; Itaú Cultural (by means of the Audiovisual and Literature and Education and Relationship departments); and Valdy Lopes Jn, who is also the exhibition's art director. Read the curatorial text about the exhibition's narrative that covers the main facts and achievements of Zuzu's life.

Gathering the Pieces

Hildegard Angel, the younger of Zuzu’s two daughters, writes about her mother's search for her son, who was arrested, tortured and killed by the Brazilian military regime, and how it impacted her work and life. After her mother’s death in a car accident caused by agents of the dictatorship, Hildegard became committed to safekeeping, preserving and collecting her mother's creations, photos and documents. “My mother spent the last years of her life gathering fragments of the memory of my brother Stuart, as if she wanted to reassemble the body that she could not find to bury”, she writes. She asks herself: “How did I manage to keep, preserve and collect all this?”
